Driving east along the south coast of Western Australia, you arrive at Esperance, which the local Aboriginal people call Kepa Kurl, meaning "water like a boomerang". Many self-driving tourists only treat this place as a stopover on their way to Cape Le Grand National Park, staying one night before heading to the beach. But if you take the time to truly experience it, you'll discover that this coastal town itself holds some of the most significant scenery on the entire south coast.
 
Facing the vast Southern Ocean, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, and without excessive commercial development, Esperance encompasses pristine white beaches, glass-like gradient seas, granite reefs, and vast salt lakes. Unlike other coasts with a singular style, Esperance blends gentle bays with wild wilderness. Whether it's cruising along the coast, sitting quietly to watch the sunset, or exploring the bays deep within the national park, you can find your own rhythm here.

 


 
38km Great Ocean Drive | A local's secret coastal gem
The Great Ocean Drive, this coastal loop road, is a hidden gem often overlooked by many tourists. The entire route spans thirty-eight kilometers, winding along the coastline, with various bays of different styles scattered along the way. You don't even need to enter the national park; a scenic drive will allow you to explore different facets of the Southern Ocean. You can pull over anywhere along the road to stop and enjoy the sea breeze.

 


 
Twilight Beach
This is the most worthwhile bay to stop at around Esperance. Fine, white sand stretches out to the sea, large granite reefs are scattered along the shore, the waves are gentle, and the sea is generally calm. During the day, the seawater appears a clear mint green, but dusk is its highlight. As the sun sets over the sea, the entire area is dyed in shades of orange-pink and light purple, and the reefs and beaches are bathed in warm light, creating a truly romantic sunset atmosphere.
The calm waves and wide shallow waters also make it ideal for families to play in the water. Stepping on the soft white sand and quietly waiting for a Southern Ocean sunset is an experience not to be missed in Esperance.

 


 
Blue Haven Beach
A tranquil small bay hidden within the loop, naturally sheltered by granite mountains. The waters are exceptionally calm, with almost no surging waves, and the seawater is crystal clear. Near the shore, it's a jelly-like tender green, gradually transitioning to a deep blue further out. There are not many visitors, and the environment is quiet, making it suitable for simply sitting on the rocks and peacefully enjoying the sea.

 


 
Salmon Beach
In stark contrast to the gentleness of Twilight Beach, this place faces the wild winds and giant waves of the Southern Ocean. The sea breeze is strong, and waves crash endlessly onto the shore. The expansive coastline reveals the raw and rugged side of the ocean, perfect for feeling the true power of the Southern Ocean. It's not suitable for swimming, but rather for distant viewing. The entire Great Ocean Drive is a relaxed pace; there's no need to rush. Drive slowly, stop often, and fully experience the coastal landscape around the town.
