Sydney Off-the-Beaten-Path Travel | Orange


 
Orange is approximately a 3.5-hour drive west of Sydney, through the Blue Mountains. It’s in the same NSW Central West wine region as Mudgee, which I’ve visited, but has a completely different vibe. Nestled at the foot of Mount Canobolas, an ancient extinct volcano, Orange boasts a higher elevation, cooler climate, and volcanic soil that nurtures vast vineyards. Beyond wine, its vibrant autumn foliage, fruit picking, and mountain hikes create a perfect country getaway. Many tourists head straight for Mudgee, missing this more diverse inland town.

 


 
Main Street of the Town | Stroll through vintage streets and experience local life
Orange's town center preserves many Victorian-era buildings. Byng Street is the heart of the town, lined with century-old trees that turn golden and crimson in autumn, making for a wonderfully atmospheric walk.

 

 

 

Independent cafes, vintage shops, and antique stores are scattered along the streets, making for a leisurely and comfortable stroll. Cook Park, located in the town center, features large old trees, ponds, and lawns, a popular spot for locals to picnic and walk.

 

 

Every autumn, layers of maple and ginkgo leaves create a spectacular display, making it an excellent spot for enjoying autumn colors right in the city, perfect for capturing stunning autumn photos without venturing far.

 

 

Mount Canobolas | Overlooking the entire land from the peak of an extinct volcano
When in Orange, don't miss this extinct volcano that has been dormant for millions of years, just a fifteen-minute drive from the town center.
The lookout at the summit offers expansive views, from which you can overlook rolling hills, vast vineyards, and the scattered houses of the distant town. There are several short, easy walking trails on the mountain, primarily through snow gum forests, where you can spot many native animals.

 

 

Pinnacle Lookout
Also part of this volcanic conservation area, it's just a short walk away. This is an excellent spot for sunrise and sunset views in the entire region. From this elevated position, you can fully overlook Orange town and the valley vineyards. When the evening sun spreads across the countryside, the scene is vast and breathtaking, perfect for photography.

 


 
If you have enough time, you can hike the Summits walking trail, weaving through the forests and experiencing the high-plateau mountain scenery. Coming in the evening, the sunset over the valley vineyards is particularly captivating. At the foot of the mountain are several renowned wineries, where the volcanic soil imparts unique flavors to the grapes. While tasting wine, you can enjoy the magnificent mountain and country views from the window.

 


 
Borenore Caves · Arch Cave
About a 15-minute drive from Orange town, this limestone cave reserve is a convenient stop, with Arch Cave being the main highlight. A very short, easy loop trail leads to it, suitable for all ages. The giant natural rock arch is visually striking, and inside the cave, stalactites and stalagmites are found. As you step inside, the temperature drops instantly, creating a secluded, wild atmosphere. There's no artificial lighting inside, so remember to bring a flashlight. Outside the cave, there's a picnic lawn where you can rest and enjoy a meal after exploring the caves.

 

 

Winery Experience | Pinot Noir and Sparkling Wine from a Cool Climate Region
Orange is a well-known cool-climate wine region in Australia, primarily featuring Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines, distinctly different from Mudgee's richer red wine style. The vineyards spread across the volcanic hills, making for picturesque scenes in the autumn light.
