Melbourne Travelogue | Penguin Parade: A Precise Guide to Three Ticket Types

Visiting Melbourne, seeing the little fairy penguins return to their nests on Phillip Island is an absolute must-do. As the sun sets by the sea, groups of tiny penguins waddle ashore to their homes, a gentle and heartwarming sight. Many first-time visitors are unsure how to choose between the three ticket types, so today, I'll combine my personal experience and the official park rules to give you a detailed introduction.

Park regulations strictly prohibit flash photography and loud shouting to disturb the penguins. Wild little blue penguins are naturally timid, and strong light and noise can harm them. On-site staff patrol strictly, so everyone must abide by the rules.

The daily penguin parade time changes with the sunset, so be sure to check the official website for the exact time before you go. During peak season, visitor numbers are huge, and buying tickets on-site at the last minute can easily mean no tickets are available. Booking online in advance is the safest option.

Differences between the three ticket types

1. General Viewing, budget-friendly, is the basic ticket chosen by the most visitors.

1. Viewing location: The largest open-air public grandstand in the park, furthest from the beach where the penguins come ashore, on higher ground.

2. Viewing angle: Wide view, offering a complete overview of the entire beach. You can clearly see large groups of penguins gradually coming ashore from the sea, with the magnificent spectacle of the whole group returning to their nests unfolding before your eyes.

3. Viewing limitations: Far distance, only the silhouette of the penguin groups can be seen clearly, unable to see details of their appearance or expressions and movements. Open-air with no shelter, directly exposed to the sea breeze.

2. Penguin Plus

1. Viewing location: Independent, exclusive small open-air grandstand, located right next to the main path where penguins come ashore, very close to the beach.

2. Viewing angle: Close-up direct view of the landing area, penguins can be clearly seen as soon as they emerge from the sea. You can observe the penguins' physique and feather patterns, offering a highly detailed viewing experience.

3. Viewing limitations: Also an open-air grandstand, still exposed to the cold sea wind, ticket price is much higher than general admission.

3. Underground Viewing

1. Viewing location: Enclosed indoor glass viewing area, at a low, eye-level perspective, unaffected by weather.

2. Viewing angle: Warm and wind-free indoors, observe penguins walking on the boardwalk at zero distance through glass, clearly seeing details.

3. Core drawback:
The underground viewing area does not allow you to see the complete process of penguins coming ashore from the ocean. The view is obstructed, and you cannot see the beach or ocean area. You can only observe the penguins that have already come onto the beach and are heading towards their nests. To see them coming ashore, you must rely on the live broadcast on indoor screens.

Please note:

     1. For General, Penguin Plus, and Underground tickets, all visitors later walk the same public boardwalk to see the penguins up close.

    2. The only difference between General and Penguin Plus tickets is the initial grandstand location when waiting for the penguins to come ashore: one offers a panoramic distant view, the other a close-up of the landing details. The subsequent close-up viewing route is identical.

Objective suitability of the three ticket types for different groups

    1. General Viewing Ticket
Suitable for visitors with a limited budget, who prefer to see the overall grand natural spectacle, are traveling in a large group, and simply want to experience the atmosphere of the penguin parade. It offers great value, and most visitors find the experience sufficient, fully meeting their needs, as the viewing experience for the latter half is the same for all.

    2. Penguin Plus Ticket
For visitors who want an immersive experience of the penguins coming ashore in detail and are not concerned about the price difference.

    3. Underground Viewing Ticket
Suitable for those who are extremely sensitive to cold, traveling with elderly people or children, visiting during rainy or adverse weather, or seeking a comfortable and quiet viewing environment.

Here's a brief summary of the approximate times penguins come ashore in different seasons, for your reference:
